Biography

Arthur Patrick Bourchier (SN 4749) was born and educated at Warrenheip. He also attended Ballarat High School and was a 19-year-old teacher when he enlisted on July 13th 1915. He left Australia aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th 1916, destined for service in France with the 58th Battalion. At Gueudecourt on November 22nd 1916. he suffered serious wounds to his legs and was carried to a dugout which, about two minutes later, according to Lt. J.E. Turnour, ‘was struck by a shell which blew it to pieces, killing Bourchier instantly’. He was 20 years of age. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the honour boards at Warrenheip State School and Ballarat High School.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Arthur P. Bouchier.
