Biography

Thomas Williams (SN 1748) was a 35 year old boot maker from Talbot Street when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 1st 1916. He trained with Ballarat’s 14th Depot Battalion before joining 60th Battalion reinforcements at Broadmeadows. On May 4th he embarked from Melbourne on the Port Lincoln, spent two months in Egypt then disembarked in England in August. In December 1916 he joined the 58th Battalion in France. In March 1917 he transferred to the 15th Australian Machine Gun Company and in April 1918 to the 5th AMG Battalion. He avoided serious battlefield wounds or illness but soon after the fighting ceased, in December 1918, he came down with influenza. He returned home on the Port Melbourne reaching Melbourne on August 20th 1919. His service is also remembered on the Ballarat City Fire Brigade honour board. He was 72 years of age when he died in September 1953.
