Ernest Alfred Chinnery was born in Ballarat and a Barman by trade when he enlisted in the 58th Battalion on 06 March 1916 at the age of 28. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916. . He developed chronic synovitis in his right knee and in April 1917 he was attached to 2nd ANZAC Headquarters on permanent base duties. After the cessation of hostilities, in March 1919 he was deployed to France for several months with the Australian Graves Registration Unit. He returned to Australia on the Port Denison, disembarking at Melbourne on November 13th 1919.
