Biography

Samuel Ernest Osborne (SN 967) born at Ballarat, was a married 26 year old labourer when he enlisted in Hamilton on April 10th 1916. On May 27th he embarked aboard the Ascanius to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion on the Western Front. In January 1917 he was hospitalised with a gunshot wound to his arm but rejoined his unit in March only to be gassed in June. With the end of the war in sight, he was transferred to the 10th Field Ambulance before returning to Australia on nursing duty aboard the Prinz Hubertus. He disembarked on August 24th 1919 and was discharged on October 8th. He served again (SN V84764) in World War 2.
