Biography

Horace Stanley Bolitho (SN 290) listed his occupation as collector when, as a 21 year old from Errard Street in Ballarat, he enlisted on August 18th 1914. He joined the 8th Battalion and trained in Ballarat before embarking on October 19th aboard the Benalla. He was then part of the historic Gallipoli landing in April 1915, but in early May he was wounded, sustaining gunshot wounds to his abdomen and shoulder. He was evacuated to hospital in England and was unable to rejoin his battalion, now in France, until July 1917. In late October 1917 he was again withdrawn to England for treatment for 'trench feet'. Once again he rejoined his unit in France in March 1918 only to be wounded again on August 2nd. A gunshot wound to his forearm necessitated his third evacuation to England. Before he could complete his recovery the Armistice was signed, so in early December 1918 he boarded the Port Hacking to return to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on January 27th 1919.
