Biography

David Gullan McGrath (SN 7987) declared himself to be 18 when he enlisted in Ballarat as a student on July 7th 1915. He embarked aboard the Bakara on November 5th to serve as a driver with the Service Corps. He sailed first to Egypt and then on to France in June 1916. His service was marred by periods in hospital due to tonsilitis and influenza. He left England on February 13th 1917 aboard the Benalla and returned to Australia where he was discharged ‘underage’ on April 23rd 1917.

His father David also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
