David Charles McGrath was born in Clementown and was a Student when he enlisted from Ballarat with the 3rd Divisional Train, 22nd Company, Army Service Corps on 28 January 1916 as a Staff Sergeant at the age of 43. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A34 Persic on 3 June 1916.

He constantly experienced ill health but was promoted to Warrant Officer (Class 1) and deployed to France in June 1917. Concerns for his health led to his return to Australia in early 1918. He was discharged æmedically unfit' but was able to resume his parliamentary career.
