Richard Mann (SN 6947) was a single 27 year old coach builder from Ballarat when he enlisted in Melbourne on October 4th 1916. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Hororata on November 23rd 1916. He reached England in January 1917 but was soon hospitalised suffering from bronchitis. In early 1917 he transferred from the 8th Battalion to the 23rd Battalion in France but soon faced charges of being absent without leave and being in possession of a false pass. At war's end he returned to Australia, disembarking at Melbourne on February 15th 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit on March 17th 1919 due to influenza.
