Biography

James Wood Preston (SN 4563) was born in Ballarat and educated at Redan State School. He enlisted on July 8th 1915 as an unmarried, 23 year old, photographer. He was posted to the 8th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne in January 1916 on board the Themistocles. Once in Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Infantry Battalion. He arrived in France in June and suffered a gunshot wound to his right eye a few weeks later. He rejoined his unit in August but was killed in action in the Gueudecourt area on November 22nd 1916. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
