Alfred Vale, born in Ripon, a Blacksmith by trade, enlisted in the 8th Infantry battalion on 18 August 1914 at the age of 30. Aside from battling bouts of influenza Vale's records show he was fortunate to have escaped much in the way of injury until 14 November 1915 when he received a gunshot wound to the left foot. On 28 November 1918 he was granted 75 days leave with pay and was cleared to spend his leave in America.
He received his final discharge and was sent home to Australia on 21 February 1919.
