Biography

John Madden Grainger (SN 2651) was a 27 year old signal man, born in Ballarat, when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 20th 1916. He left Australia aboard the Nestor on October 2nd and sailed first to England, and then on to France in February 1917 to serve with the 58th Infantry Battalion. Three weeks later he was found guilty of trespassing on cultivated lands and sentenced to 14 days Field Punishment No. 2. In August 1918 he was withdrawn to England to take up a training role and in October he was promoted to the rank of Company Quarter Master Sergeant. After the war he returned home aboard the Devon, disembarked on October 27th 1919 and was discharged on January 12th 1920.
