Ernest Stanley Daw (SN 4793) born in Ballarat, was a married 24 year old labourer when he enlisted in Geelong on July 16th 1915. He embarked aboard the Wiltshire on March 7th to serve with the 5th Infantry Battalion. He reached the battlefields of France in July and a month later he suffered a serious gunshot wound to his hand and was evacuated to England. While being treated there he was sentenced to a period of detention for disobeying and striking a superior officer. He returned to Australia aboard the Beltana, disembarked at Melbourne on May 12th 1917 and was discharged on June 27th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service numbers V91516 and V11379.
His brother William was killed in action on Gallipoli in August 1915 and his brother Leslie also was killed in action on August 1st 1918 and they are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
