Charles Mitchell (SN 525) born in Ballarat, was a 44 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Ballarat on February 26th 1916. He embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 27th. Initially assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion he was transferred to the 3rd Pioneer Battalion before being moved to France in November. During 1917 he was wounded twice, facial wounds first then gassed two months later. These wounds brought an early end to his war. He returned to Australia aboard the Demosthenes and was discharged medically unfit on October 26th 1917.
