Gordon Wilson Dow was born in Ballarat and was a Bank clerk by trade when he enlisted in the 18th Australian Army Medical Corps on 13 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916. In November he moved from England across to France to serve with the 10th Field Ambulance with whom he served out the war. He returned to Australia after the cessation of hostilities and was discharged in August 1919.
