William Henry Johnson MM (SN 3797) born at Ballarat, was a 20 year old bricklayer when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 15th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on November 23rd aboard the Ceramic and sailed to Egypt. The AIF reorganisation then saw him transferred to the 46th Battalion for service in France. He suffered minor wounds in June 1917 and in April 1918. His bravery in the latter action earned for him the Military Medal ‘for gallant conduct near Albert.’ After the war he returned home aboard the Armagh, disembarked on May 18th 1919 and was discharged on July 10th.
