Biography

Born in Ballarat, William Henry Johnson was a single 20 year old bricklayer when he enlisted on the 15th of September 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 23rd of November 1915. On the 24th of May 1917 he was appointed Lance Corporal.
On the 7th of June 1917, William was wounded in action, but rejoined his unit on the 8th of June.
On November 27th 1917, he was promoted Corporal.
On the 3rd of April 1918, William was wounded in action, this being the 2nd occasion, but he remained at duty. He was awarded the Military Medal on the 6th of May 1918.
William returned to Australia on the 18th of May 1919 and was discharged on the 10th of July 1919.
