Robert Wingate (SN 768/Lt.) born in Melbourne, was a 19 year old postal employee when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. Assigned to the 31st Infantry Battalion he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Wandilla on November 9th. His early days in Egypt saw him hampered by some eyesight issues but by June 1916 he had been moved to France. In July he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and promoted to Lieutenant in November. In March 1918 he accidentally sprained his ankle and was unable to rejoin his unit until June. When the war ended, he returned home aboard the Zealandia and his commission was terminated on the day of his disembarkation at Melbourne, June 28th 1919.
