John Edward Whitelaw (SN 16030) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old telegraphist when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 12th 1916. He trained at the Signal School before he embarked aboard the Mooltan on August 22nd . Assigned to the 1st Wireless Signal Squadron his service was in the Middle East and at Bombay, India. He avoided wounds or serious illness and returned to Australia aboard the Janus, disembarked at Melbourne on April 19th 1919 and was discharged on June 30th.
