John Edward Whitelaw was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and was employed as a Telegraphist. He enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria at the age of 22. He volunteered and was stationed with the 1st Australian and New Zealand Wireless Squadron with the Regimental number 16030. He was discharged and Returned to Australia on the 22nd of March 1919.
