Biography

William John Kisler (SN 145) was born in Ballarat East where he attended the Golden Point State School. A telegraphist in the Post Master General's department, he was single and 24 years old when he enlisted on March 30th 1916 . He was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne in late May on board the Ascanius. During training in England he was promoted to Lance Corporal before being posted to France in November. A couple of stays in hospital saw him transferred to England in March 1917 for treatment of an 'abscess'. He was promoted to full Corporal and trained as a signaller before being transferred back to France in April 1918, where he was killed in action at Mont St Quentin on August 31st 1918. He is buried in Hem Farm Military Cemetery, France.
