Biography

Norman Kennett Buckman (SN 2054) was born in Moonee Ponds and educated at Warrnambool High School. He was an 18-year-old civil servant when he enlisted on March 8th 1915. He embarked aboard the Hororata on April 17th 1915 and came ashore at Gallipoli on July 9th to serve with the 14th Battalion. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right foot, on August 8th, that necessitated his evacuation to hospital in Egypt. He did not return to the battlefield until he reached France in June 1916. He was wounded again in August 1916, a shrapnel wound to his left hand, and hospitalised in England. He returned to France in January 1917, but on April 11th he was killed in action at Bullecourt. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France. He was 20 years of age.
