Biography

Alfred George Rooney was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron on 15 October 1914 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A10 Karroo on 11 February 1915. He suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and neck on 28 August 1915 and was evacuated to the No. 1 General Hospital where he remained for recovery until he was fit enough to return to his unit. He was transferred to the 8th Light Horse Division in February 1916 and was again sent to hospital in September of that year suffering from enteritis.*

He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on 23 September 1916 and further mentioned in dispatches in October. He embarked for Australia aboard the Hospital Transport on 1 January 1919.
