William James Phillips was born in Ballarat and was a Wader when he enlisted in the Supply Column 3, Army Service Corps 26 as a Blacksmith on 9 July 1915 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 5 June 1916. Other than an issue of disobeying an order to leave parade for fatigue on 30 November 1918, his record shows he completed his tour with no serious incident, injury or illness. He returned to Australia aboard the Port Melbourne on 5 July 1919 and received his discharge orders on 20 August 1919.
