Leslie Gordon Phillips (SN 3923), born in Ballarat, was a 27 year old tramway employee when he enlisted in Perth on September 8th 1915. Assigned to the 11th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Fremantle aboard the Mongolia on November 22nd. He sailed first to Egypt then on to France in April 1916. In late July he was wounded in action, shell shock, and evacuated to hospital. It was six months before he could rejoin his unit in the field but in April 1917 he was listed as missing in action. Further enquiry revealed that he had been captured and had become a prisoner of war at Limburg in Germany. He remained there until the Armistice had been signed, but was then quickly repatriated to England where he arrived on November 22nd 1918. He returned to Australia aboard the Euripides and was discharged on July 18th 1919.
