Biography

David Herbert Lanham (SN 3823) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Christian Brothers School. He was married, 28 years of age, and a employed as a labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. He was assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion and departed for the Front in late November on board the Ceramic. He was transferred to the 46th Battalion in March 1916 and arrived in France in June. after spending several weeks in hospital with trench fever, he rejoined his unit in August, only to be killed in action two weeks later on August 30th 1916. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harold D. Lanhan.
