Ernest Percival Sing was born in Ballarat and was a Miner by trade when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, C Company on 12 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 9 November 1915. After further training in England, he was moved to France in June 1916. In August 1917 he transferred to the 5th Division Signals Company with whom he was serving when he was wounded, gassed, on May 16th 1918. Soon after the cessation of hostilities he was hospitalised with conjunctivitis, before returning home on the Armagh. He disembarked at Melbourne on May 11th 1919 and was discharged two months later.
