Biography

Edward Augustus Sampson was born in St Arnaud, Victoria, was single and a Clerk when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, C Company on 12 July 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 9 November 1915. He attended several schools 'in the field', including signalling school throughout the first two years of service. On 30 August 1918 he suffered exposure to a gas attack which left him hospitalised. He was invalided Military Hospital where he remained until his return to Australia on 14 January 1919.
