Biography

Harry John Phillips was born in Smythesdale, VIC and was a Miner in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, D Company on 12 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 9 November 1915. On 3 November 1916 he received a shrapnel wound to the left arm and was evacuated to England. A month later he was transferred to hospital in France where he remained until he was fit enough to re-join his unit on 4 January 1917. He would return to hospital as sick throughout 1918 until returning to Australia with a medical discharge on 5 April 1919.
