Biography

Rupert Richards was born in Ballarat, was single and working as a Miner when he enlisted in the 31st Battalion, D Company on 12 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A62 Wandilla on 9 November 1915. According to his official record, other than one issue of trotting miles in a draught and disobeying an order, resulting in the forfeiture of 2 days' pay, he completed his tour without major incident, illness or injury returning home to Australia on the Nestor with a case of influenza on 2 January 1919.
