James Daniel Hickey (SN 419/Lt.) born in Ballarat, was a 34 year old bookkeeper when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 18th 1914. Assigned to the 4th Light Horse Regiment he embarked aboard the Wiltshire on October 19th, first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. He served on Gallipoli for seven months then in Egypt, Syria and Palestine, rising rapidly through the ranks to lieutenant in July 1918. His service record shows he was known for his conscientiousness and energy. He was granted ‘1914 leave’ and returned home on the Ceramic, disembarked on September 27th and his appointment was terminated on October 11th 1919.
