His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 August 1915. His time in Egypt was marked by three charges of being absent without leave and one of 'being in town (Alexandria) without a pass'. While on active service in France he sustained a severe shrapnel wound to his shoulder and was evacuated to hospital in Sheffield, England.
