Biography

William James Whatman (SN 4617) was born in Creswick, but enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. He was a dyer, aged 21 and single. He was allocated to the 58th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in January 1916 on board the Themistocles, reaching France in June. On November 22nd 1916 he was killed in action, has no known grave, and is listed on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Although Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name correctly, his plaque, cast in the 1930s, records his name as W.Whatmore.
