Ernest Henry Kopke (SN 436) born in Williamstown and was a 25 year old bookkeeper when he enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment on August 18th 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board the Wiltshire on October 19th 1914. He served at Gallipoli and was evacuated from there in July 1915 suffering from heat exhaustion. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on October 31st 1917, the day his 4th Light Horse Regt took part in the famous charge at Beersheba. He disembarked back in Australia at Melbourne on December 24th 1918 and was discharged February 22nd 1919.
