William Robert Hunter was born in Ballarat, and enlisted from Ballarat East on 27th March 1916. He was 18 years old, single and worked as a labourer. He was posted to the 39th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 1849. During his service in France he became ill and was evacuated to hospital in the UK, where he died on 25th June 1917, of septic meningitis. He is buried in the Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, UK
