Biography

Phillip Leslie Hammer (SN 1132) born in Ballarat, was a married 25 year old grocer when he enlisted in Geelong on July 12th 1915. On November 10th he embarked aboard the Ascanius to serve with the 29th Infantry Battalion. In early 1916 he was troubled by lumbago but by late March he was fit enough to cross to France attached to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade. From this point he avoided serious illness or injury and at war’s end he returned aboard the Nestor, disembarked at Melbourne on December 15th 1919 and was discharged on March 14th 1920.
