Born in Ballarat, Phillip Leslie Hammer was a 25 year old married grocer when he enlisted in Geelong, Victoria, on the 12th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 10th of November 1915.
Phillip returned to Australia on the 15th of December 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 14th of March 1920.
