Edward Clarence Scarff (SN 3124) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Melbourne on August 10th 1915. He embarked from Melbourne on November 24th aboard the Ceramic, first to England and then to France in March 1916 assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers. He suffered a shrapnel wound to his back on July 27th 1916, but by September he was able to rejoin his unit in Belgium. A period of leave in England in July 1917 was followed by 40 days in hospital for treatment of a disease. After the war he returned to Australia on the Castalia, reaching Melbourne on May 30th 1919 and being discharged on July 22nd.
His brother James also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
