Biography

Thomas Archibald Peady (SN 4565) was born in New Zealand but was educated at Ballarat’s Black Hill State School. He was a 23 year old pastry cook when he enlisted on July 7th 1915, and left Melbourne with the 8th Battalion on board the Themistocles at the end of January 1916. He transferred to the 58th Battalion while training in Egypt then moved to the 15th Light Trench Mortar Battery after his arrival in France in June. He was promoted to Corporal in October and suffered a minor gun shot wound to his face in May 1917. In June 1918 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for 'getting forward ammunition to the guns under heavy evening fire under trying circumstances'. He was promoted to Sergeant in August but was wounded again at the end of the month at Mont St Quentin, suffering gunshot wounds to the knee and back. On September 4th 1918 he died of his wounds and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
