Biography

Roy Martin (SN 3349) was born in Ballarat where he attended the Mt. Pleasant State School, but enlisted in Melbourne on July 12th 1915. He was 18 years old, single and employed as an engineer. Assigned to the 5th Infantry Battalion, he left Australia in October on board the Nestor. He was promoted to Sergeant while training in Egypt before arriving in France at the end of March 1916. He suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm and hand in July which resulted in his evacuation to England. He returned to France at the start of 1917 but died of wounds incurred near Albert on February 11th 1917. He is buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery, France.
