Biography

Martin Leslie Kinnane (SN 2401) was orphaned as a child and grew up at the Ballarat Orphanage. 20 years old, single and employed as a groom/gardener, he enlisted in Ballarat on July 12th 1915. He was assigned to the 24th Infantry Battalion and left Melbourne for the Front in October on board the Osterley. After arriving in France in March 1916, he suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder in August and was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit at the end of 1916 but was killed in action during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt on May 3rd 1917. He has no known grave, and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
