Biography

Henry Frederick Coleman, a sailmaker from North Carlton, enlisted in the 5th Infantry Battalion on 18 August 1914 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A3 Orvieto on 21 October 1914. He was wounded in battle, receiving a gunshot wound to the right thigh on/about 25th April 1915. After recovery he was discharged back to duty and was later promoted to Sergeant. Sergeant Coleman received subsequent field promotions to Quartermaster Sergeant and to 2nd Lieutenant, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
