Born in Ballarat, Herbert Swain Greening was a single 24 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment on July 13th 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 11th of October 1915.
On August 17th 1916, Herbert was wounded in action, but rejoined his unit on the 19th of August 1916.
On the 6th of February 1917, he was wounded in action on a second occasion with a gunshot wound to his left wrist.
He returned to Australia on the 3rd of January 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on the 15th of February 1918.
