Biography

Lowen Hutton Richardson was born in Ballarat and was a Bricklayer by trade when he enlisted in the 5th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 13 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October 1915 and sailed to Egypt where in December he was hospitalised at Heliopolis suffering from influenza. In May 1917 while serving in France he was withdrawn to hospital suffering from Trench Fever. Once recovered he rejoined his battalion, but on September 20th he was wounded in action. He sustained a gunshot wound to his right knee and was evacuated to the Norfolk War Hospital in England. From there he was returned to Australia on the Euripides and disembarked at Melbourne on March 21st 1918.
