William Shannon was born in Ballarat and at some stage moved to Dennington near Warrnambool where he worked as a Labourer. William was married and at the age of 35. He enlisted in Melbourne on 18 August 1914. His Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 19 October 1914. Discharged at Melbourne on 12 April 1915.
