George Klug (SN 720) was born in Ballarat and attended the Pleasant Street State School. He was 27 years old, single and employed as a painter at the time of his enlistment on July 12th 1915. He joined the 31st Infantry Battalion and departed Melbourne in November on board the Wandilla. After further training in Egypt he moved to the battle front in France in June 1916. Only a few weeks later, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his face, back and arms, rejoining his unit in August. While 'detached for duty with Anzac Cinemas', he was killed in action 'by bomb' at Villers-Bretonneux on April 24th 1918 and is buried in Lijessenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
