Alfred Gilbert Percy Withers (SN 10614) was a 26 year old motor mechanic at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne on July 10th 1915. He trained with the 31st Battalion at the Melbourne Showgrounds, then on December 31st 1915 he embarked on the Afric, bound for overseas service. In May 1916 he reached France, attached to the 21st Field Artillery Brigade. He suffered persistent ill health, particularly pulmonary tuberculosis, and by January 1918 it was determined that he should return to Australia. He returned aboard the Osterley and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on May 25th 1918. He died at Ballarat on September 15th 1972 at the age of 84.
