Richard Josiah Middleton was born in Ballarat and was a Carpenter by trade when he enlisted in the 2nd Field Company Engineers, Reinforcement 9 on 14 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 14 October 1915.
He arrived in France in March 1916 and safely negotiated the war until late 1918 when illness had him in hospital at the time the Armistice was signed. He returned to Australia on the Medic and reached Melbourne on May 31st 1919.
