William Elphick Moon (SN 22423) was born in Ballarat and educated at Dana Street State School and the Ballarat School of Mines. He was 20 years old, single and an analytical chemist when he enlisted in Ballarat on November 24th 1915. He joined the 8th Australian Field Artillery Brigade and embarked for active service aboard the Medic in May 1916. He was killed in action on June 25th 1917 at Neuve-Eglise and is buried at Pont d'Achelles Military Cemetery, France. He was 21 years of age.
His brother Philip also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
