Leslie Coward was born in Ballarat, and enlisted from there on 14th July 1915. He was 21 years old, single, and employed as a cleaner. He was posted to the 14th Infantry battalion, with Regimental No. 4156. He was promoted Lance Corporal during his service. He was seriously wounded in the fighting at Bullecourt on the 11th April and was admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance. He was transferred to the 49th Casualty Clearing Station where he died on 12'h April1917. He is buried in the Achet-le-Grand Cemetery, France.
