Biography

Ernest James Martland (SN 803) was born in Melbourne and was a 25 year old, unmarried clerk living in Bendigo when he enlisted on August 18th 1914. Attached to the 7th Battalion, he sailed from Melbourne in October on board the Hororata, first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. He suffered a severe head wound at the historic landing and was evacuated to hospital in Egypt where he died of his wounds on May 15th 1915. He is buried in Chatby Military & War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.
