William Claude Phillips (SN 3910) was born in Scarsdale, but enlisted from South Melbourne on August 2nd 1915. He was a maker of chairs, 21 years old and single when he was appointed to 23rd Infantry Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne in February 1916 on board the Warilda and arrived in France in late March. During his service he was promoted to Corporal. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on May 3rd 1917, has no known grave, and his name is on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
