Biography

George Lonsdale Birkett (SN 3006) born at Carngham, was a 19 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 19th 1915. He embarked aboard the Osterley on September 29th and sailed to Egypt where he was transferred from the 59th Infantry Battalion to the 15th Field Artillery Brigade for service in France. He reached France in June 1916 but in August he suffered a severe gunshot wound that fractured his forearm. He was evacuated to England where he was assessed as ‘incapacitated’ so he was returned to Australia aboard the Karoola. He disembarked on April 10th 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on June 5th.
