Joseph Stanley Charles was born in Windermere (Ballarat) and was a Farmer by trade when he enlisted in the 58th Battalion on 24 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. . He then transferred to the 59th Battalion, still within æPompey' Elliott's 15th Brigade, in time for the tragic Battle of Fromelles. With slaughter all around him, he was lucky to receive a mild gunshot wound to his thigh. He was withdrawn to hospital in England, returning to his unit in early December. He was again hospitalised in March 1917, suffering from Trench Foot. He rejoined his unit in August and returned to Australia at the war's end.
