James Quinlan was born in Romsey, VIC, single and was a Labourer in Windermere, Victoria when he enlisted in the 8th Battalion, B Company on 21 August 1914 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A24 Benalla on 19 October 1914. He returned to Australia 31 August 1915. On or about 16 February 1916 absented himself and was reported as still missing by 4 April. He received a final discharge on 26 January 1917.
